The Company
Now for something different.
Like the US Air Force, the Royal Australian Air Force started life as part of the Australian Army. At that time, it was known as the Australian Flying Corps (AFC). This group flew sorties in the Middle East and France during World War I.
After the war, the Flying Corps was disbanded and replaced with the Australian Air Corps (AAC). The AAC was designed to be a stop-gap until an independent air force could be created.
At the end of March 1921, the Australian Air Force was formed as an independent military force. In May of the same year, King George V gave his permission to add the prefix “Royal” to the service. During World War 2, members of the RAAF took part in many theatres in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific.
Since the end of World War 2, the RAAF has been involved in combat a handful of times. They have also been involved in many humanitarian missions to disaster areas around the globe.
