Lotus 1-2-3
This ad hit US televisions in 1983.
Lotus 1-2-3 was released in January of 1983. It was a spreadsheet application that also offered graphing and database functions. It because very popular and replaced VisiCalc as the number one spreadsheet application. Lotus 1-2-3’s popularity helped IBM sell millions of IBM PCs, as business bought them for their accounting departments.
I first encountered this ad while watching Robert X. Cringely’s Triumph of the Nerds. That miniseries sparked my interest in the early history of the PC.
