IBM introduced their Application System/400 series of midrange computer systems. The new system was very popular, within two years over 100,000 systems were installed in businesses across the country. It was so successful that IBM continue to improve and build on the original. In 2006, the line was renamed System i.

Interestingly, Bill Gates once said that the AS/400 division would be the only part of IBM that Microsoft would consider buying.

There is a website for those who still work on AS/400 systems.
