The Company
I’m always on the lookout for ads from smaller companies. Most of the time, they have an interesting look to them. But they also don’t have much information available. Today’s ad is no different.
When I tried to Simonsoft, I didn’t find much. opencorporates has listings for two Simonsoft companies in the UK, but both were founded in the 2000s. On top of that, there is a product named SimonsoftCMS that kept popping up in the search results.
I’ll tell you what I did find out. The company was founded in 1983. I discovered this ad in the September of 1984 issue of Acorn User: “Simonsoft A new software company starting up. To build up my library quickly, I am offering a magnificent 35% royalties for high quality programs. Send to Simonsoft, 25 Tathan Road, Abingdon, Oxon.” I didn’t find any ads for Simonsoft in the 90s.
The Product
Dave Reeder wrote the following review for the Simonsoft's Disassembler in the January 1984 issue of A&B Computing:
“This is a very powerful 6502 disassembler which enables the user to manipulate machine code and Assembly source code in a most flexible way. The instructions are occasionally slightly vague but are generally very thorough. Also error messages produced whilst carrying out a procedure are a little confusing.
Overall, the impression is that this is a high-quality utility of great use to a wide range of users which I recommend as a good example of this type of program.”
