Was it me, but with the likes of Dr Dobbs, programming felt like a "real" profession. So when I grew up, I loved to read Dr Dobbs, but I've not seen a copy for decades. Is the whole development field of today missing this angle?
I completely agree, although I think podcasts are part of the present equivalent (with the disadvantage that they are sequential in presentation and vary tremendously in quality). As the former editor in chief of DDJ, I am working with the company that presently owns the rights (Informa) to get permission to repost some of the top articles.
That would be awesome. I didn't understand much of the content as a kid, but it's strange how this put a professional spin on things. I keep asking whether we have lost the art and science of coding today.

I was born at the end of 1986, so I never got to read these magazines when they came out.
